CHS Math Department Implements New Procedures

March 25, 2011

The Math Department at Colby High School has implemented the following procedures to assure that each student adequately understands the current concepts taught before taking the next chapter/unit test. Please contact the CHS Administration or Math Department if you have any questions.

 CHS Math Guidelines/Procedures

The following procedures are being implemented to insure that each student adequately understands the current concepts taught before moving to the next chapter/unit.

The Math Teacher will:

               • Teach each concept and assist students during scheduled class time.

               • Be available to clarify, help, and/or re-teach students outside of class time.

Prior arrangements should be made to insure availability
+ Prior to school each morning (often available by 7:15 am)
+ During seminar –math support is provided even if teacher not available

    Applied Math I & II – M-W-F
Algebra I and Geometry – Daily after 3:00

Algebra II – Daily when able to pass

• Contact parents/guardians if the student is not successful after the first re-test.

• Assist in designing and providing support for math interventions if the student is not successful after two re-tests or cannot complete within the timeline.

The Math Student must:

            • Have all assignments in before taking the unit/chapter assessment at the mandatory 70% (adequate level to demonstrate understanding). If the assignment is below 70%, the student must show all steps of work as he/she makes corrections on all missed problems.

               • Pass all assessments at 70% or better.

+ If not passed, the student must arrange to attend a help session with the instructor to receive assistance/re-teaching immediately as the retesting must be completed prior to the next chapter/unit assessment.

+ The student is required to show all work as he/she corrects all missed test problems.

+ The student may be given additional assignment for practice to understand the concepts.

+ The student will be expected to remain current and complete the next chapter/unit with the class.

               • Re-test with a score of 70% or better.  (Parents/guardians will be contacted if not at 70%)

+ Recommended:  First re-test be within 5 school days.

+ If scoring at or above 70%, the test grade recorded will be an average of the first two assessments with the lowest grade being recorded 65%.

               • Re-test a second time if the first two attempts were below 70% PRIOR to the next assigned chapter/unit assessment.

+ If scoring at or above 70%, the test grade recorded will be an average of the first three assessments with the lowest grade being recorded 65%.

- If scoring below 70%, the student will be moved to a math elective  (will not count for math graduation requirement)

Math Interventions include:

               • Additional math assessments to determine skill/knowledge gaps

               • Customized math elective will be designed and delivered in an alternative setting

               • Student will take the entire course prior to graduation to insure math knowledge.
