Colby Joins New League
August 23, 2010
Colby has joined the newly formed GWAC League which begins this season. The Colby Eagles have left the Northwest Kansas League due to several concerns. With declining enrollment in other NWKL schools, it became increasingly hard to schedule C-Team games and even JV contests. In the past, we were forced to schedule extra teams in an effort to fill our JV and C-Team schedules. Competing against schools of similar size in the GWAC League will help alleviate this problem. The six teams in the GWAC League are all 3A or 4A schools.
This will bring additional travel time, but the administration has been working on ideas to address this issue. Some middle school contests will meet in the middle at neutral sites. In addition, many events have been combined to have Varsity, Junior Varsity and/or C-Team contests on the same date. In scheduling, an effort was made to limit multiple long trips for students in the same activity during a school week.
The new league will bring about changes but the positives far outweigh the negatives. AD and High School Principal Larry Gabel remarked, "We have spent two years writing the constitution for the GWAC League, trying to tweak it and make it right. It is a work in progress but I feel it will be a positive step for Colby Public Schools."
Other teams forming the new GWAC League with Colby are: Ulysses, Hugoton, Goodland, Scott City and Holcomb. We hope you will enjoy following the Eagles as they start a new era in Colby Eagles history. We are also very pleased to announce that the new GWAC logo was designed by our very own high school art instructor, Donna Roberts. Congratulations to her for having her design chosen for the new league.
