Student's Work on Display in Washington D.C.
Mrs. Roberts recently received notification that her student, Ashley S., will have a piece on display in Washington D.C. From all the 2010 Scholastic Art award-winning artwork, the staff of The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities selected art to be included in a special exhibition of national award recipient work from The Scholastic Art Awards of 2010. This year, 44 works are on display in their offices in the historic Old Post Office Building in Washington , D.C. While this exhibit is not open to the public, many important visitors to these offices see the works. CHS student, Ashley S.'s batik, "Colorado Watefall" will be part of this year-long display at the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. The article about her award winning piece is located below.
Ashley S. received a Gold Medal for her batik “Colorado Waterfall” at the National Scholastic Art Competition last year and had the opportunity to travel with Donna Roberts, the high school art instructor to New York City to receive her award. Her piece won an American Vision Award at our Regional Scholastic Competition in Montezuma, KS, thus qualifying to be sent to the National Competition. According to the guidelines of the competition, 500 Gold Medal recipients were selected as the most accomplished artists and writers on the national level. Artists had their work on exhibition during the National Celebration of Events. On June 9th, students and teachers were celebrated at the National Scholastic Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Student award winners and their instructors were recognized onstage during the ceremony. On June 10, teachers and guests were invited to the National Scholastic Art and Writing Exhibition at the World Financial Center.
Clearly this is a huge honor for Ashley’s work to be recognized on the national level. Students from Colby High School have received national awards at this competition in four of the last five years, which clearly speaks to the strength of our art program. Former CHS students winners at the National Scholastic Competition have been: Lindsey B., Lissa M., Quinnlyn W., Sam S. and now Ashley S. We congratulate Ashley and Mrs. Roberts for their exceptional work.
