Christo's "Running Fence"

Installation Art at the Grade School

by Trish Starbuck-Art Teacher

September 07, 2010

In Learning Lab, 1st and 2nd grade students explored a very different type of art, Installation Art.  Installation art adds objects to a space to transform an area and make you look at it differently.  Usually Installation Art is outside and temporary, meaning it doesn’t last for a very long time.

“Running Fence” is an installation artwork created by Christo.  Christo and his wife work together to create works of Installation Art; usually work attributed to Christo was created by the two of them together.  To create "Running Fence" they installed a 241/2 mile long fabric fence across the landscape of two counties in California.  The fence was only up for 14 days, but the planning of the event took 42 months.

In the grass is a group installation project created by 1st and 2nd grade students in Learning Lab.  This is our interpretation of “Running Fence”.  Like most Installation Art, this was only on display for a short time.  We enjoyed the CGS "Running Fence" for two days and then it was gone.  Like all good artists, we documented the event with pictures.  A big thank you to the volunteers at RSVP who constructed our fences for us!
