Colby High School journalism hit a high benchmark at the state
contest May 3. Six journalism students placed in seven events at
the University of Kansas, exceeding the previous record of five set
in 1980.
Fourteen students qualified with 19 entries for the premier
contest.
“I had high hopes that the students would do well, but it is a
state event and the competition is fierce,” Donna Henry, adviser,
said.
At the state level, judges award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places along
with three honorable mentions.
Students who placed were senior Lissa M., 3rd in Editorial Cartoon;
senior Johnna W., honorable mention in Advertising, and honorable
mention in Yearbook Copy Writing; senior Paige S., honorable
mention in Cutline (Caption) Writing; junior Levi S., honorable
mention in Infographics; junior Kiri K., honorable mention in
Headline Writing; junior Jordan K., honorable mention in Feature
Writing.
Johnna, who placed in Yearbook Copy Writing last year as well, was
excited to repeat her accomplishment.
“It felt wonderful to place twice this year after I had placed once
last year. It’s always great to make an improvement from one year
to the next,” Johnna said.
Other students who competed were senior Lindsay F., Theme
Development/Graphics; senior Stephanie A., Theme
Development/Graphics; senior Laura D., Yearbook Copy Writing;
senior Logan W., Headline Writing; Lissa M., Theme
Development/Graphics; Paige S., Sports Photography; sophomore Keesa
W., Feature Photography and Editing; sophomore Jaylea B., News
Writing and Editorial Writing.
Junior Stephen D. also qualified for state in Editorial Writing but
was unable to attend the state competition that weekend.
