Why do we need a Wellness Plan?
With the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of
2004, the U.S. Congress established a new requirement that all school
districts with a federally-funded school meals program develop and
implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity
by the start of the 2006-2007 school year.
Our State Law, Senate Bill 154 required the Kansas State Board of
Education to establish wellness policy guidelines. This bill was written
into law as Kansas Statute 72-5128.
The Wellness Plan is divided into three parts:
* Nutrition Education
* Physical Activity
Within each part, there are three levels:
* The BASIC level meets all requirements of current federal and state laws, regulations and policies.
* The ADVANCED level incorporates all guidelines for the basic level plus more healthful guidelines.
* The EXEMPLARY level incorporates all guidelines for the Basic and Advanced levels plus more healthful guidelines.
